…and nothing works! In my years in the skin care business this has been a common complaint. When I get a person with this complaint in for a consultation, the problem is always the same. They bring in their product for me to look at and it isn’t right for their skin. It either doesn’t have enough active ingredients to do anything and is filled with potentially dangerous ingredients, or it is just not the right product for the needs of their skin.
How can this be? Skin care products are sold everywhere! The grocery store shelves are full of product! Every department store in the country has a cosmetic and skin care department! How can most people not have skin care that works?
Those are good questions. Let’s start with the grocery store. People who shop at the grocery store for their skincare products are looking for convenience and price point. Let’s face it. The products are cheap. They are also readily available. And there are lots of them! One of the problems is that to keep the price point down these skin care companies must use inexpensive ingredients. Their focus is not on safety or effectiveness, but price. Those ingredients that you read about in your magazines as effective are also expensive. You are not going to get those good, expensive ingredients at the grocery store. And how do you really know what active ingredients your skin needs? You don’t!
So how about the department stores? Their products are certainly pricey enough! They have to work…right? WRONG! Why? Because these products are OTC (over the counter). They cannot have enough active ingredients to be effective or they couldn’t be sold over the counter. Read the ingredients and you will find that those touted expensive ingredients are at the end of the ingredient list. If they are at the top, than the percentage is low (2% Vitamin C instead of the clinical 20%).
So what is the answer?
Find a good skin care professional and have your skin evaluated and appropriate product prescribed for you. Yes, it will be more expensive, but you will use less of it AND you will get results! I don’t know about you, but I don’t mind paying more for something if it works.
